Kolkata, April 8 (IANS) In a bid to reduce congestion and increase the frequency of trains, Kolkata Metro Sunday introduced an automatic signaling system which will reduce the gap between two trains from six to five minutes.

"We have introduced automatic signaling system today from Kavi Subhas (New Garia) station to Mahanayak Uttam Kumar (Tollygunge) station. By April 15, the automatic signalling system will be installed up to Dum Dum station," said Metro Railway spokesperson Partyush Ghosh.

Last month, the Kolkata Metro had increased its services from 236 trains to 270 trains on weekdays.

Beginning with five stations spread over 3.4 km in 1984, the Metro now connects 23 stations, traversing 25 km.
