One killed in Firozabad building collapse

Firozabad, Sat, 07 Apr 2012 ANI

Firozabad (Uttar Pradesh), Apr.7 (ANI): One worker was killed after a cold storage plant collapsed in Uttar Pradesh's Firozabad district on Saturday morning.

A truck parked adjacent to the building was also damaged, as a portion of the building fell on the truck, injuring three persons who were inside the truck.

Rescue teams quickly swung into action and they tried to clear the debris with an aim to save those who were trapped under the rubble.

Sub-divisional magistrate of Shikohabad, Kumendra Singh, said all the workers inside the building have been rescued.

"Half portion of the building suddenly collapsed and it fell on a truck that was parked adjacent to the building. Around 18 people were present in the building at that time. Some were inside the building and some were on the terrace. All the people have been rescued with the help of the ladder and rope," said Singh.

Singh attributed the likely cause for the collapse of the building to the use of poor quality of material. He added that the building was constructed within six months time.

"The investigations are yet to begin but at the preliminary stage we can say that the building must have not been constructed properly. It must have not been technically sound and poor quality of material must have been used for its construction and they must have begun the use of the building before time, which resulted in this mishap," said Singh.

Many Indian buildings do not conform to safety regulations, with owners constructing extra floors or structures without approval from the concerned authorities and beyond the sanctioned floor space index (FSI) or floor area ration (FAR). (ANI)
