New Delhi, April 6 (IANS) The Congress' Delhi unit Thursday, expressing displeasure at the condition of MCD schools in the capital, blamed the BJP for not providing better infrastructure for children to study.
Terming the BJP as "worthless', the Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee (DPCC) president J.P. Aggarwal said that from the last five years, the BJP that rules the MCD failed to provide basic requirements to children studying in the schools.
"The city government always asked them to improve the standard of primary education in these schools, and was ready to give as much money as they want for it. But despite this fact, conditions of MCD schools are the worst," Aggarwal said at a press conference.
He said the MCD's annual expenditure is Rs.7,000 crore, of which, around Rs.1,700 crore is been spent on primary education.
"One-fourth of the total amount goes to education and still the BJP has failed to improve the schools' standards. The party failed to remove the popular impression that these schools are meant for children living in slums," said Aggarwal.
Children are deprived of basic necessities like drinking water, toilet facilities, electricity, computers, infrastructure and lots of schools are running under the tent in the city, Aggarwal further alleged.
The number of schools is decreasing continuously. In the year 2010, there were 1,946 schools in the city, which fell to 1,938 this year. Similarly, there were around 10 lakh students in MCD schools in 2010, but this year, the number has decreased to approximately 9 lakh, 42 thousand, said Aggarwal.
