Congress refuses to reveal details of Rahul's UP poll review meeting

New Delhi, Thu, 05 Apr 2012 ANI

New Delhi, Apr 5 (ANI): The Congress Party on Thursday refused to divulge details of the review meeting called by party general secretary Rahul Gandhi to analyze the outcome of the Uttar Pradesh assembly polls, describing it as an internal matter of the party.

"This is an internal matter of the party. This matter cannot be discussed with the media. The party has a procedure to review, which is being followed. It would not be appropriate to comment on this matter," said Congress spokesperson Rashid Alvi.

"Of course, the expectations from Uttar Pradesh were not accomplished. So, a review meeting is being done. During the review meeting, special emphasis will be given on these things," he added.

With the Congress tasting defeat in the Uttar Pradesh polls, the review meeting is also being considered as a step taken by Rahul Gandhi to make the party battle-ready for the 2014 Lok Sabha polls.

Gandhi, who had campaigned aggressively for the Congress in Uttar Pradesh, is expected to hold parleys with party candidates and workers.

Gandhi had earlier last month accepted responsibility for the party's poor performance in the Uttar Pradesh assembly polls.

Gandhi had then said that the results of the seven-phased polls in Uttar Pradesh, was a clear indication that the Congress organizationally still had a long way to go to win the confidence of the public in the state.

He had, however, expressed confidence that overtime; the Congress Party would surely win in Uttar Pradesh one day.

The results for sixteenth legislative assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh were declared on March 6 showing a clear majority to Samajwadi Party, which won 224 seats of total 403 seats in Uttar Pradesh.

The Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) was routed with 80 seats. BJP was placed in third spot with 46 seats, while Congress was relegated to the fourth place with a tally of 28 seats. (ANI)
