Kolkata auto rickshaw drivers go on rampage, strike over fuel price hike

Kolkata, Tue, 03 Apr 2012 ANI

Kolkata, Apr.3 (ANI): Kolkata's auto rickshaw drivers went on a rampage in different parts of the city on Tuesday and held rush hour traffic to ransom in protest over the fuel price hike.

Auto rickshaw drivers pelted stones on buses and forced passengers to disembark.

The highly unionised three-wheeler operators blocked roads at Kankurgachi, Phulbagan and Hudco crossing in north Kolkata and at Rashbehari crossing in the southern part of the city, police said.

There were incidents of brick batting on buses.

Children heading to schools and elderly people had a harrowing time as they were forced to walk to their destinations or back home.

The auto-rickshaw strike began at around 10 a.m. and police had to step in to bring the situation under control.

No one has been arrested in connection with the blockade. (ANI)
