Jammu, March 29 (IANS) Two Hizbul Mujahideen militants, arrested for an assassination bid on a Congress MP, escaped from police custody Wednesday night but have been rearrested, police said Thursday.
Inspector General of Police (Jammu zone) Dilbag Singh told media late Thursday evening that several police parties were pressed into service to track down the terrorists, and 'we were successful in nabbing them'.
Singh said the terrorists would be interrogated.
He said the police were also conducting an inquiry as to how the two managed to escape.
Police said Dullah Gujjar, commander of a Hizbul Mujahadeen outfit, and his associate Sher Khan, had escaped near Patnitop on the Jammu-Sinagar highway, about 100 km from here, Wednesday night. They were being brought from Kishtwar to Udhampur after appearing at the local court there, a police official said.
They escaped apparently after stopping for tea at a shop near Patnitop, added the official.
The militants were arrested in a foiled attempt to assassinate Congress MP Lal Singh in 2004 in Kishtwar district.
