New Delhi, March 27 (IANS) Police Tuesday cordoned off the areas around Tibetan settlements in the national capital while some Tibetans were arrested from different parts of the city ahead of Chinese President Hu Jintao's visit here.
Two Tibetans were arrested from New Delhi's Press Club where they were protesting against Hu Jintao's visit to the city.
"Some more Tibetans were also arrested from different parts of the city - India Habitat Centre and Ambedkar Bhavan - for holding demonstrations against Hu. But the exact number of arrested people is not known yet," said Youdon Aukatsang, member of Tibetans' Tehor Welfare Society.
More than 50 Tibetans were arrested Monday after a 27-year-old man set himself on fire during a demonstration against Hu's India visit, said a protester.
The protesters were sent to Tihar for law and order violation.
General secretary of the Tibetan Youth Congress Tenzin Chokey said police have cordoned off the Tibetan settlement areas to prevent the protesters from going out.
"The Tibetan youths hostel in west Delhi's Rohini area has been sealed since Monday night while some other areas like Pitampura and Majnu Ka Tila have been cordoned off," said Chokey.
However, senior Delhi Police officials said they have only taken precautionary measures to avoid any untoward incidents.
"Some Tibetans were nabbed as they were found to be involved in the protest," said a senior police official.
"No Tibetan has been arrested so far. Police teams have been deployed in areas where Tibetans reside to keep a watch on them in order to avoid any kind of untoward incident like Monday's self immolation case," said Rajan Bhagat, Delhi Police spokesperson.
Bhagat also informed that they have slapped prohibitory orders banning the gathering of four or more people only in New Delhi district area in order to prevent any kind of Tibetan protest or conference in connection with Chinese President Hu Jintao's India visit March 28-29.
The measures are being taken ahead of the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) summit here Thursday.
