New Delhi, Mar.27 (ANI): Parliament was adjourned once again on Tuesday after Lok Sabha MPs demanded the creation of a new state of Telangana.
Lawmakers were seen chanting anti-government slogans as they lampooned the ruling Congress party for failing to address the matter.
Lok Sabha speaker Meira Kumar was forced to adjourn proceedings twice.
"I would like to ask the government why they are not raising the issue of Telangana. You asked the people of the opposition to step back and they obeyed. But now the lawmakers of the ruling party and the TRS (Telangana Rashtra Samithi) are creating uproar. Can you at least ask the ruling party to ask their lawmakers to step back? We are here to attend the session," said Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj.
The demand for a separate state of Telangana, which was merged into Andhra Pradesh in 1956, is half a century old.
The government has postponed the decision to carve a new state, causing immense unrest in the region.
Swaraj urged ruling party lawmakers to find a solution.
"The government should resolve this issue. Many suicides have been committed in Telangana. That is why they (lawmakers) are agitated. The lawmakers of the ruling party are not letting the session function. The government should resolve the issue immediately and form Telangana state. We will support this resolution," she said.
The parliamentary disruption comes just days after two students fighting for separate statehood set themselves on fire in the Warangal district of Telangana. (ANI)
