Chandigarh, March 26 (IANS) In the second such judgment in two months, a court here sentenced a Punjab-based drugs peddler to death for repeatedly dealing in drugs.
Balwinder Singh was awarded death penalty by the court of additional district and sessions judge Shalini Singh Nagpal. He was arrested by the Punjab Police March 2007 with a consignment of heroin.
This is the second death penalty awarded to a habitual drugs peddler by the court here. In January this year, the court had, in the first case of its kind in the country, awarded death penalty to drugs peddler Paramjit Singh of Punjab.
The court said that Balwinder deserved death penalty as he was caught dealing in drugs while being on bail in another drugs case. He had earlier been awarded 10 years imprisonment in another case.
The special public prosecutor said that Balwinder was a habitual offender.
The court also awarded a 12-year prison term to his accomplice, Satnam Singh, besides a penalty of Rs.100,000.
