Washington, Mar.22 (ANI): Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney's momentum from his Illinois victory was blunted Wednesday by a massive campaign blunder when a top aide said the candidate's positions are as changeable as an Etch-A-Sketch.
According to Politico, Eric Fehrnstrom reinforced the oft-repeated accusation that Romney is a flip-flopper when asked on CNN whether the former Massachusetts governor risks alienating moderate voters in the general election by skewing too hard to the right during the GOP primary.
"Well, I think you hit a reset button for the fall campaign. Everything changes. It's almost like an Etch-A-Sketch. You can kind of shake it up and we start all over again," Fehrnstrom said.
Romney's rivals wasted no time attacking the candidate over the comment, launching an onslaught of online mockery.
"Etch-A-Sketch is a great toy but a losing strategy," tweeted struggling GOP presidential candidate Newt Gingrich.
Rick Santorum used the gaffe to repeat one of his favorite criticisms - that Romney is a fake conservative. He laid on the sarcasm as he did so.
The Democratic National Committee, predictably, didn't leave the mistake for Gingrich and Santorum to chew on by themselves.
Its strategists released a video ad entitled, "Some Things You Just Can't Shake Off." (ANI)
