Paris, Mar 24 (ANI): A French teacher has reportedly been suspended for allegedly asking students to observe one-minute silence for suspected Al-Qaeda-trained killer Mohamed Merah, who was recently shot dead by police.
Merah, 23, was wanted in connection with the killings of three French paratroopers, a rabbi and three children ages 4, 5, and 7.
He died in a police assault on his flat in Toulouse on Thursday after a 32-hour siege.
The Paris Normandie newspaper said that students walked out after the teacher in Rouen called Merah "a victim".
According to The BBC, the teacher is also believed to have said the media and French President Nicolas Sarkozy invented Merah's links to Al-Qaeda.
The local head of the SGEN-CFDT trade union, Pascal Bossuyt, told that the woman 'said something unfortunate in a particular context and she immediately regretted what she said'.
According to the report, the local education authority said the suspension does not mean she is guilty. (ANI)
