Rangoon, Mar 20 (ANI): Myanmar has pardoned a leader of the Karen ethnic minority group who was given a 20-year sentence for treason.
Mahn Nyein Maung, a senior figure in the Karen National Union (KNU) was arrested last year trying to cross from northern Burma into China.
The BBC quoted a spokesperson for the KNU, as saying that Maung will now be sent back to Thailand.
Kyi Mint, Maung's lawyer, said that his client is 'expected to take part' in new peace talks between the KNU and the government in April.
The Karen National Union has been fighting the central government since Burma's independence from Britain six decades ago.
Burma's government said the KNU is illegal, but recently signed a ceasefire agreement with the group.
It has recently held initial peace talks with other armed ethnic minority groups to try to put an end to decades of tension in the country. (ANI)
