Lucknow, Mar 7 (ANI): Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Mulayam Singh Yadav met Uttar Pradesh Governor B L Joshi at the Raj Bhavan here on Wednesday evening to stake his claim to form the next government in the state.
Mayawati, who was rejected by Uttar Pradesh in the elections, tendered her resignation to Governor Joshi earlier in the day.
The Samajwadi Party held its Parliamentary Board meeting here earlier and selected Mulayam Singh Yadav as the candidate for chief ministership.
The verdict of the Uttar Pradesh polls was in favour of Mulayam Singh- led Samajwadi Party, as it rode on an anti-incumbency wave to dislodge incumbent chief minister Mayawati, who was looking for a clear majority for her Bhaujan Samaj Party (BSP).
Samajwadi Party won an absolute majority by winning 224 seats in the 403-member assembly. The Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) was left far behind with 80 seats. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won 47 seats.
Congress won 28 seats. Congress ally RLD won 9 seats, the NCP one, while others have won 14 seats. (ANI)
