BJP confident of victory in UP, Uttarakhand polls

Bhagalpur, Mon, 05 Mar 2012 ANI

Bhagalpur/ Dehradun, Mar 5 (ANI): The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has expressed confidence about achieving electoral victory in Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand on Tuesday, when a counting of votes takes place.

BJP spokesperson Shahnawaz Hussain said the party is hopeful about securing a clear majority in Uttar Pradesh.

"The Congress party is bound to lose elections in Uttar Pradesh, as it had earlier lost in Bihar They had contested elections with full force in Bihar, but witnessed a great loss. I am sure they will not win. On the other hand, the BJP has contested these elections with a collective leadership, and I am sure, we will form the government in the state with a clear majority," Hussain told media in Bhagalpur.

He also slammed the Congress party for hobnobbing with their political rivals.

"On one hand, Rahul Gandhi issues statements against the Bahujan Samaj Party, and on the other, Congress party leaders like Beni Prasad Verma claim that Mayawati is a better leader. The Congress party wants to form a coalition with either the BSP or the Samajwadi Party under the leadership of Mulayam Singh Yadav and wants to come to power in Uttar Pradesh," said Hussain.

Echoing similar sentiments, Uttarakhand Chief Minister B.S. Khanduri said he would retain power in the state.

"As far as I see it, it seems that the voters have exercised their franchise in the benefit of the BJP. Our party will again come to power in Uttarakhand with a clear majority," Khanduri told media in Dehradun.

Staggered voting for assembly elections in five states began on January 28 and concluded more than a month later on March 3.

Besides Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand, assembly polls were also held in Punjab, Goa and Manipur.

The poll results will broadly indicate trends for the 2014 general elections. (ANI)
