Ajit Singh rules out alliance with Samajwadi Party in UP

New Delhi, Sun, 04 Mar 2012 ANI

New Delhi, Mar 4 (ANI): Civil Aviation Minister and Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) President Ajit Singh on Sunday denied reports of planning to ally with the Samajwadi Party (SP) in Uttar Pradesh.

"There is no truth in this news. Our alliance is with Congress and we would continue that. Whatever we will do, we would do together. We have mutual understanding (with Congress)," Singh told media here.

Singh's comment came in the wake of his son, Jayant Chaudhary, reportedly hinting at a post-poll tie-up with the Samajwadi Party.

Exit polls suggested that the RLD may get 10 seats which will be of crucial importance for SP's efforts to muster enough numbers from smaller parties and independents to ward off the prospect of the state being put under President's rule.

In 2007, RLD had contested in alliance with SP. While SP got 97 seats, RLD bagged 10

The Uttar Pradesh polls are being viewed as an opportunity for major political parties to re-establish their foothold in the country's fifth largest and most populous state.

The first, second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh phases of polling occurred on February 8, 11, 15, 19, 23, 28 respectively and March 3.

The poll results will broadly indicate trends for the 2014 general elections. (ANI)
