New Delhi, March 1 (ANI): Congress party has hailed the Supreme Court for slamming Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) leader Mohan Bhagwat's claims that slain chief of Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) Hemant Karkare was 'under pressure' to catch and indict right-wing activists in the Malegaon blast case.
Congress spokesperson Manish Tiwari came down hard on Bhagwat and the RSS and questioned their dual character on militancy.
"The statement of the RSS sanghchalak, which was reported in some newspapers, is not something which we are surprised at. It is reflective of their continuing double standards and selectivity on the question of terror. Infact whenever the Bharatiya Janata Party or the RSS has been called to measure up on the rhetoric with regard to terror, they have always been found wanting," Tiwari told the media here.
Tourism Minister Subodh Kant Sahay said that the RSS chief had insulted a martyr like Karkare.
"RSS had raised questions on the true martyrs like him (Karkare). So there was no sadder moment than that. The whole country salutes him and he was such a capable officer. If the Bhgawat has such an observation about him then it's depressing and that is why the Supreme Court has rapped him," Sahay added.
The apex court on Wednesday termed Bhagwat's remarks as 'unnecessary'.
According to media reports, five days before he was killed in the 26/11 Mumbai attacks, the then Karkare had told Bhagwat that he was under incredible pressure to nail RSS members in unsolved blast cases. (ANI)
