US warns Pak of 'crippling consequences' over Iran gas pipeline deal

Islamabad, Thu, 01 Mar 2012 ANI

Islamabad, Mar 1 (ANI): US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has said that Pakistan could face damaging consequences if it goes ahead with the proposed Iran-Pakistan pipeline project.

"We have been very clear in pointing out the consequences of building this pipeline," Clinton said while addressing the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Foreign Operations in Washington.

Clinton's remarks came in response to a Congressman asking why the budget request for the State Department included a one billion dollar request to help Pakistan address its energy problems.

Clinton said that they supported the alternative of a pipeline via Turkmenistan.

The Turkmenistan pipeline was a better alternative, predictable and will avoid business with Iran, she added.

According to The Express Tribune, Clinton pointed out that Pakistan would face consequences as underlined in the Iran Sanctions Act.

She added that moving ahead with Pak-Iran pipeline would be particularly damaging for Islamabad because the country's economy is already shaky, and would further undermine Pakistan's economic status. (ANI)
