Washington, Feb 27 (ANI): Meryl Streep picked up the third Oscar of her career when she was named the best lead actress for her portrayal of former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher in 'The Iron Lady' on Sunday.
When the nominations were announced in January, Streep was installed as the odds-on favourite to win the award for her role as Thatcher in 'The Iron Lady', though Viola Davis had become the favourite going into Oscar night, Contactmusic reported.
Her role in the British movie had already landed Streep a Golden Globe award, and although 'The Iron Lady' received mixed reviews from critics, the 62-year-old's performance was regarded as one of the best of her career.
"Thank you so much, when they called my name, I had this feeling I could hear America say, Oh no, oh come on, not her again," Streep said while accepting the award from presenter Colin Firth.
Other nominees in the category of Best Actress were Michelle Williams, for her role as Marilyn Monroe in 'My Weekend with Marilyn', and Rooney Mara for 'The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo'. (ANI)
