EC sends notice to Sri Prakash Jaiswal

New Delhi, Fri, 24 Feb 2012 ANI

New Delhi, Feb.24 (ANI): The Election Commission on Friday sent a notice to Union Coal Minister Sri Prakash Jaiswal over his recent remark that if the Congress did not win elections in Uttar Pradesh, President's rule should be imposed in the state.

Though Jaiswal did an about turn on his remark by saying he was just talking about constitutional alternatives, the Election Commission is of the view that a formal explanation is necessary, as it is in violation of the Model Code of Conduct.

The Election Commission also pulled up Congress ministers Salman Khurshid and Beni Prasad Verma for making promises of providing a nine percent sub-quota reservation for Muslims in Uttar Pradesh if the party won the state elections.

Both were asked to give replies before being exonerated.(ANI)
