BSP, SP derailing development of UP: Rahul Gandhi

Etah , Mon, 20 Feb 2012 ANI

Etah/ Jahnsi, Feb 20 (ANI): Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi has accused the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and the Samajwadi Party (SP) for derailing development of Uttar Pradesh.

Addressing a rally in Etah on Sunday, Gandhi questioned the people of Uttar Pradesh over the socio-economic development in the state and said that the Samajwadi Party and Bahujan Samaj Party have not contributed to the state's development.

"In my view, most of the states in India are progressing constantly, except for Uttar Pradesh. Different political parties visit the state and make false promises of providing electricity and water; however they are never practically implemented," he said.

"I want to ask you just one question that in spite of Mayawati and Mulayam Singh Yadav (governing the state on four and three occasions respectively, has the state witnessed any socio-economic progress or have they visited a poor man's house to know his plight? I think the answer is no," he added.

He further said: "The progress in any other state, whether it is Andhra Pradesh, Haryana or Delhi, is not because of the politicians working there, it is because of the people and their strong will to elect a government that thinks and acts effectively for their overall welfare."eanwhile, Congress President Sonia Gandhi has assured the people that her party would stand by them both in their periods of sorrow and happiness if elected to power. If you give us opportunity in Uttar Pradesh then I want to assure you that we will stand by you in your periods of sorrow and happiness," Sonia told a gathering in Jhansi.

The Uttar Pradesh polls are being viewed as an opportunity for major political parties to re-establish their foothold in the country's fifth largest and most populous state. new 403-member state assembly will be elected in March. The poll results will broadly indicate trends for the 2014 general elections. (ANI)
