'The Duchess Effect' becomes year's biggest fashion buzzword

London, Fri, 10 Feb 2012 ANI

London, Feb 10 (ANI): The Duchess of Cambridge has taken the top spot in the annual Fashion Buzzword List poll for second year in a row, becoming the first person ever to do so.

'The Duchess effect' is a term that has come to describe anything that she wears that goes on to sell out globally within hours.

The list is compiled using a combination of data collected from an analysis of words mentioned on the Internet, in the blogosphere, and from the top 75,000 print and electronic global media outlets, as well as from new media sources as they emerge, the Daily Mail reported.

Lady Gaga earlier held the number one and number two spots during the 2010 and 2011 seasons respectively. This time around however, Lady Gaga has totally dropped off the list.

A double victory was scored by the Middleton sisters this year, as it was revealed that the term 'Pippa's Bum' also made it to the Top 10, coming in at number five in the annual list compiled by Texas-based Global Language Monitor (GLM).

Apparently, the most eminent example of the Duchess Effect was the 475 pounds navy blue Issa dress that she wore when she announced her engagement to Prince William.

The dress sold out right away, as did budget copies quickly put out, including one 16 pounds look-alike by Tesco.

"The Duchess Effect appears to extend much further than the economic impact of Kate's fashion choices," Bekka Payack, fashion director for Global Language Monitor, said.

"This year the fashion landscape seems to be a brighter, more accessible place with the styles more colourful, feminine and graceful than we've observed in many years.

"Fashion is now being influenced from all points on the globe, with the rise of the regional fashion centers driving tribal, sustainable and eco-based trends," Payack added.

Other buzzwords in this year's list comprised peplums, braids and pyjamas, paisley, Gatsby - in the light of the news the famous novel was being turned into a film - pale colours, tangerine and novelty denim.

Florals, animal prints, ankle boots and vintage, especially Twenties flapper styles, are also set to be huge this year, according to the study. (ANI)
