Gujarat High Court reprimands Modi Government over Godhra riots issue

Ahmedabad, Wed, 08 Feb 2012 ANI

Ahmedabad, Feb 8 (ANI): The Narendra Modi Government was today censured by the state high court for failing to provide compensation to religious places destroyed or damaged during 2002 post Godhra riots.

Upholding a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by the Islami Relief Committee Gujarat (IRCG), the High Court ordered the Gujarat Government to repair or reconstruct places of worship, damaged during the riots.

The high court in its order clearly held the Modi Government responsible saying the religious places got damaged due to the negligence of the state government.

The court also asked the government why it failed to stop the riots.

A 26-judge committee has been set up by the high court to oversee the process of granting compensation to places of worship.

The Gujarat Government had argued in court that it was under no obligation to provide compensation to the damaged places of worship. (ANI)
