Siliguri, Feb 6 (ANI): West Bengal Governor M.K Narayanan on Monday said that the Government is committed to carve out a separate Gorkha state.
"We are committed to give the GTA (Gorkhaland Territorial Administration). We will work out the schedule," Narayanan told media here.
However, General Secretary of GJM Roshan Giri indicated that the government's failure to keep its words can convert into a mass protest.
"The GTA should be formed by March 27, 2012 and this date is decided by our president. If our demands are not met, then we will hold a huge public meeting in Sukna on April 17. And rest of all will be decide thereafter," he said.
The GJM had signed a tripartite treaty with West Bengal and the Central governments on the issue of granting semi-autonomous territorial status to the region of Gorkhaland.
A renewed demand for a separate Gorkhaland region, which would include Darjeeling and some contiguous areas of Jalpaiguri District, has created fresh turmoil over the past few months.
The Gorkha population in West Bengal is estimated to be around a million. (ANI)
