Washington, Jan.25 (ANI): In what could be his final State of the Union address, President Barack Barack Obama on Tuesday called for keeping alive the American dream as "the defining issue of our time" and pledged to fight obstruction by congressional Republicans.
Addressing a joint sitting of Congress, Obama, who is seeking re-election in November, defended a long list of his trademark policies-tax increases on the wealthy, Wall Street reform, health care reform, government stimulus spending.
Experts and observers described the speech as a politically and economically shrewd speech, which would satisfy Obama's Democratic base while winning over some independents.
With unemployment in the United States still above eight percent, Obama said the challenge before the country was to choose between opportunity for some or giving everyone a chance to prosper.
"The defining issue of our time is how to keep that promise alive. No challenge is more urgent. No debate is more important. We can either settle for a country where a shrinking number of people do really well, while a growing number of Americans barely get by. Or we can restore an economy where everyone gets a fair shot, everyone does their fair share, and everyone plays by the same set of rules," he said in his nationally televised address
"The state of our union is getting stronger, and we've come too far to turn back now," Obama added. (ANI)
