Haldwani, Jan 23 (ANI): Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) President Nitin Gadkari on Monday said his party would decide upon a candidate for the Prime Minister's post at an appropriate time, but added that Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi was one of the candidates.
Gadkari said his party's top priority at the moment was to win the assembly elections in five states.
"First and foremost, winning the elections in five states is our priority, who will be there in 2014; the decision has not been taken as yet in the party. There are several capable leaders in the party. The party will take the decision at an appropriate time as to under whom the elections have to be fought; one of them is Narendra Modi," Gadkari told the reporters here.
"See, the party has to take the decision and there are four to five leaders, who are capable and we are a democratic party, we are not affected by any proprietary and as a democratic party, we will take a decision accordingly," he added.
Gadkari further said the BJP would discuss the names of five or six important people and then come up with a final name for the post.
"The party chief does not have an opinion. Do not take out any meaning, the only thing is the party members will not discuss the name in the media and the senior leaders of the party will discuss the names of five or six important people and Narendra Modi is one of them and then they will take the final decision," he added.
Gadkari had earlier backed Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi as the Prime Ministerial candidate, and added that he would also back his candidature as the chief of the party. (ANI)
