Shortage of LPG in Shimla results in deforestation

Shimla , Sat, 04 Dec 2010 ANI

Shimla, Dec.4 (ANI): Shortage of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) has compelled villagers in Himachal Pradesh's Shimla district to use the traditional methods of cooking, which is resulting in deforestation across the state.

There is a shortage of LPG cylinders in the district, following the suspension of gas service from Panipat refinery.

"There is a shortage of LPG gas because gas is not being supplied since last two to three months. So, we have to cut wood logs. Winters have arrived and we have to make food so we are compelled to cut tress," said Ajit Kumar, a resident of Baldyian village of Shimla.

Food and Civil Supplies minister, Ramesh Dhawala, said there was some problem in the Panipat refinery due to which the supply was not regular but the problem has been fixed now.

"This is true that the Panipat refinery was not working due to some reasons because of which the supply was not regular. And the supply from other refineries also stopped. But now Panipat refinery has been restored and the supply from other refineries have started from last five to six days," said Dhawala. By Hemant Chauhan (ANI)
