Kolkata, Nov.23 (ANI): Human rights activists, poets and singers observed a 'Shameful Day' here and demanded the return of controversial Bangladeshi author Taslima Nasreen.
Interacting with mediapersons here on Monday, human rights activist Sujato Bhadra accused the government of succumbing pressure from fundamentalists to drive Taslima out of Kolkata.
"The Government, so called secular government, succumbed to pressure and refused to give her any protection. Not only this, top police officials of Kolkata threatened her with dire consequences. So, she had to leave," Bhadra said.
Bhadra said that since then the court ban on Nasreen has been lifted, she should be allowed to come back to India and given Indian citizenship.
Nasreen was asked to leave the country following protests over her controversial books "Lajja" and "Dwikhondito". She has written four other books, which are also said to be controversial. By Ajitha Menon (ANI)
