Dec 18: An interesting but surprising fact discloses in a recent research conducted by the researcher team of Tel Aviv University revealing that ‘obese have more chances of bad breath’.
Though the scientist clarifies that a relationship between obesity and bad breath is surprising and “This finding should hold for the general public. But we don’t have any scientific evidence as to why this is the case. That will be the next step.” yet they claim a direct proportional relationship of obesity with bad breath.
“The more you obese, the more risk of having bad breath” claims breath expert Prof. Mel Rosenberg from the Department of Human Microbiology and the Maurice and Gabriela Goldschleger School of Dental Medicine, Sackler Faculty of Medicine at Tel Aviv University.
The researchers included a sample of 88 adults of different weights and heights. For conducting study, the scientist asked the participants to go through a regular check up of mouth odour and asked questions relating to their daily habits. On the basis of that collective data, scientist reached in an inference that “overweight patients are more likely to have bad breath.”
“The finding on alcohol and bad breath was not surprising because the anecdotal evidence was already there. However, the finding that correlated obesity to bad breath was unanticipated,” said Prof. Rosenberg.
“Many factors could cause the connection between obesity and bad breath. Obese people may have a diet promoting the condition of dry mouth” and “obese people may be less in tune with taking care of their mouths and bodies.” advised Prof. Rosenberg.
Tsachi Knaan, a co-author in the study and graduate student said, “self-detection of bad breath is not possible so one should not be embarrassed in pointing this out to someone or vice versa.” According to Knaan, “My goal now is to give people a list of the potential factors that could lead to this condition, so they can treat themselves.”
“We have certainly opened a window of questions here,” said Rosenberg over this new disclosure.
