Puri Beach Festival: A Complete Cultural Carnival

Nov 26:  The on going 13 th Puri Beach Festival-2007 (Nov 23-27) has so far bewitched its audience with its beauty, charm and cultural grandeur that leaves a legacy behind and hence making it one of the most focused mega event of the country. The five-day event apart from showcasing the rich tradition and culture of Orissa does present some absorbing cultural performances from various states thereby making it one of the best compositions of a cultural carnival.

The festival is organised every year by the Hotel and Restaurant Association of Orissa (HRAO) with co-sponsorship from the Ministry of Tourism, Government of Orissa and also support from various cultural organisation from different states, which has been a delight for domestic and foreign tourists. Held on the golden sandy beach of Puri, known for its religious values, the festival includes a range of acts such as Odissi dance, folk dance, tribal dance and others.

Cultural classics

On Sunday evening in a special event the noted film actress Hema Malini and her daughters Eesha Deol and Aahana Deol performed Odissi dance that was highly appreciated by the audience as the trio are trained classical dancers and continuously performing on stage across the country in such events.

The festival also stages traditional arts from different states including Bhangra Dances from Punjab, Purulia Chhau from Bengal, Siddi Dhamal from Gujurat, Bharat Natyam from South and various others local dance forms of Orissa that constitutes Sambalpuri, Goti-pua, Danda Dance, Ghumura etc.

Sporting actions

The festival does showcase several sporting events such as beach volley ball, Kabaddi, cricket and boat race among local fishermen. For the first time such events are also arranged for women and girls.

The Sports Department has also arranged Para Sailing for the adventure enthusiast tourists during the beach festival.

Festival significance

The festival being one of the mega cultural events is an exclusive podium to promote Orissa as a major tourist destination of the country and also opens up huge economic opportunities for the local handicraft and handloom products. This certainly gives a boost to the tourism culture of the state.

It also bestow a big platform to hundreds of artistic genius to display their brilliance in front of thousands of world-wide audience as the festival from its inaugurating year 1993 has been one of the event the world to watch out for.

The grandeur of nature’s beauty stands out as somebody has said nature is the infinite sphere of which the centre is everywhere and the circumference nowhere.
