New Delhi, June 2 (ANI): Union Minister of State for Statistics and Programme Implementation Sriprakash Jaiswal on Wednesday released a report comprising the results of the 63rd National Sample Survey pertaining to India's unorganized service sector.

The report revealed that service sector enterprises operating from the rural areas were estimated at 60 percent in 2006-2007.

"About 16.5 million service sector enterprises were estimated to be working in India in 2006-2007. Of the total number of enterprises estimated, 60 percent was in rural India, and 40 percent in urban India," said Jaiswal.

According to a report, the service sector provided employment to a quarter of the nation's total workforce in 2004-2005 and accounted for nearly 54 percent of India's Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

Uttar Pradesh has more share of workers employed in the service sector in comparison to the other regions of the country.

"The top five states in terms of their share of workers were Uttar Pradesh with 12 percent, Andhra Pradesh with 11 percent, Maharashtra with 10 percent, West Bengal with 10 percent and Tamil Nadu with nine percent," added Jaiswal.

The survey was conducted in 5,573 villages and 7,698 blocks across the country, and the report reflected a comprehensive study of nearly 1,90,000 Indian enterprises. (ANI)
