Shillong, Mar. 16 (ANI): Models wearing handloom attires sashayed down the ramp to mark the handloom week at a unique fashion show in Shillong.
The show called 'The Symphony of Weaves - the Handlooms Ensemble' was organised by the state's textile department on Monday.
A total of eighty garments were displayed on the ramp during the shows.
Meghna Rai Medhi, a fashion designer whose collection was displayed on the ramp, said that the show was organized with an aim to make handloom creations popular with the younger generation.
"This particular collection of handloom was done by me and of course the students of NIFT that combines the students from all over the state. This is an effort to make handloom popular, make it wearable for the younger generation. That's basically awareness we are doing it for the handloom, and also for the weaver," said Meghna.
Vikram Rai Medhi, Chief Executive Officer of National Institute of Fashion Technology said that they wanted to make handloom popular across the country.
"At the same time we would like to promote the entire handloom in the country. We start with the state of Meghalaya because Shillong is known to be the fashion hub. People here are fashionable. If the youngsters of Shillong get excited to wear handlooms then they can send the signals to other parts of the state," said Medhi.
Fashion weeks and ramp-shows such as this are meant to give a fillip to the handloom sector, the second largest employer in country providing jobs to 6.5 million people. (ANI)
