Fergie backs Rooney to easily surpass Ronaldo's 'incredible' goal tally

London, Sat, 27 Feb 2010 ANI

London, Feb 27 (ANI): Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson believes that his ace striker Wayne Rooney can easily surpass Cristiano Ronaldo's incredible goal tally of 42 in the season Manchester United won both the Premier League and Champions League two years ago.

Rooney now has 27 goals this season and with plenty of matches to come, boss Ferguson believes anything is possible of his superstar striker.

"Well, we've 10 league games and hopefully we'll get six European ties. That's 16 games. A goal a game would bring him to 43. So there's pressure for you," Ferguson said.

"Who wouldn't thrive on that? Crikey me! He's on a great goal scoring burst now. He's popping up in the right places at the right time. His judgement in the penalty box is improving and that's a nice sign," The Sun quoted him, as saying.

"Well, it has to be a consideration simply because we've got important games coming up. The problem you see is he's desperate to play. He's always desperate to play. He is hard to leave out because he has got the energy all the time.

"Maybe it's a chance to play him at right-back or something this time because he keeps telling me he's a great defender. Centre-half or sweeper!" Ferguson said.

England boss Fabio Capello has backed those hailing Rooney as one of the best in the world and explained his part in encouraging the United star to be more selfish.

Capello said: "I hope he will be the same in June and not tired because he is in a really fantastic moment. I told him: 'Rooney, if you want to score goals, you have to go in front of the goal'. (ANI)
