Patiala, Sep 8 (ANI): Punjab Police has seized around 20,000 sacks of sugar and arrested two persons at Rajpura in Patiala district.
Acting on a tip off, the police sleuths unearthed around 20,000 sacks of sugar, which were illegally hoarded in a sugar mill with an intention of black-marketing.
No sooner than the police officers ascertained the illegally stored sugar, they sought the assistance of the state's Food Supply Department officials and seized the entire stock. The police said that stocking more than 2000 quintals of sugar is illegal and the counting of sacks is still on.
"Our Station House Officer in Rajpura got information that they have hoarded a lot of sugar which is illegal. They checked secretly. When they got confirmed reports, they informed DFSO (District Food Supply Officer) and his team came here with us," said Manmohan Sharma, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Rajpura Range, Patiala.
Ahead of a series of festivals lined up during which the consumption of sugar is likely to shoot up, the government has stepped up the vigil to check hoarding of sugar. (ANI)
