Prachanda urges Asian powers to counter US

London/Kathmandu, Wed, 12 Aug 2009 ANI

London/Kathmandu, Aug 12 (ANI): The Chairman of the Unified CPN (Maoist), Prachanda, has said that Asian countries should develop a unified security strategy to combat US influence in South Asia.

Speaking at the Embassy of Nepal in London on Tuesday, Prachanda said India, China and Nepal should work together to counter American.

Prachanda said the emerging Asian economies should rely less on the West, especially the United States.

In an interview with the BBC, he said the US is trying to have a greater influence in Asia, but India and China should come together to provide security and prosperity to their people.

He said that he wanted a good relationship with both countries.

He also acknowledged India had helped his party and other political parties of Nepal reach the 12-point agreement that paved the path for the Maoists to join mainstream politics.

New Delhi lost its warmth towards the Maoists when he became Prime Minister, he said.

Prachanda who stepped down from the government nearly two months ago following a row with President Dr Ram Baran Yadav over sacking Chief of Army Staff (CoAS) Rookmangud Katawal said his party was determined to change the basic structure of Nepal through the Constituent Assembly. (ANI)
