Oct 12: Al Gore to share his Noble Prize with Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). India’s R.K Pachauri is presently heading the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate change.
The Nobel Prize is bestowed on them for their efforts to build up and circulate knowledge about man made climate change, and to lay the foundations for the measures that are needed to counteract such change.
The committee said that though scientific reports on ever-increasing climatic change has been issued since past two decades, but IPCC created a broader consensus about the connection between human activities and global warming.
Al Gore got his share of prize for being one of the leading environmentalist politicians and his strong commitment which is reflected in political activity, lectures, films and books. His commitment shows his grit to strengthen the struggle against climatic change.
His Oscar winning documentary “An Inconvenient Truth’ was appreciated worldwide for the strong message it gives, what happen if human activity goes unchecked.
The committee said that by awarding Noble Prize for 2007 to IPCC and Al Gore the Norwegian Nobel Committee is seeking to contribute to a sharper focus on the processes and decisions that appear to be necessary to protect the world’s future climate, and thereby to reduce the threat to the security of mankind. Action is necessary now, before climate change moves beyond man’s control.
Dr Rajendra K Pachauri, who is the chairman of IPCC, was born in Nainital, India, on 20 August 1940. He served at various respectable posts in both national and international organisation. He took his current post as the Director General of TERI (The Energy and Resource Institute in April 2001).

He was elected as Chairman of IPCC, in 2002, established by World Meteorological Organisation and United Nation environment Programme in 1998. He has been active in several international forums dealing with climate change and policy dimension.
Pachauri said after the news of IPCC sharing Noble Prize for peace with Al Gore, which though he is not able to give much time to TERI but he has faith on his reliable one who looks to the cause of TERI, asking everyone to come together and add strength to strength.
Norwegian committee elected by Norwegian Parliament decides the Noble prize winner. In his will Alfred Nobel wrote “it is my express wish that in awarding the prizes no consideration be given to the nationality of the candidates, but that the most worthy shall receive the prize, whether he be Scandinavian or not."
In this era when we are facing the consequences of warming our climate, this award will further add to broaden our concern related to climatic changes.
