Europe, Wed, 27 May 2009 IANS

London, May 27 (IANS) The British Museum is to launch a new exhibition of Rajasthani paintings as part of an 'Indian Summer' season opening Thursday, curators said Wednesday.

The exhibition, titled 'Garden and Cosmos', displays 54 large paintings - on loan from the royal collection at the Mehrangarh Museum Trust in Jodhpur - that were produced between 1725 and 1843.

They have never been seen in Europe before, said Richard Blurton, assistant keeper at the museum's Asia department.

The season, running from May to October, features exhibitions, installations, performances, lectures and film screenings about India.

Prince Charles, who was given a preview of the exhibition Tuesday night, said: 'This remarkable exhibition provides a way to see India's great artistic heritage.

'India holds a great fascination for many of us including myself.'
