Monastery for Buddhist nuns in Ladakh
Ladakh (J&K), Oct 30 (ANI): In Ladakh, where majority of the population is Buddhist, there is a village called Nayarma where reside 28 all-women Buddhist saint monasteries. The monastery in Nayarma has its own library and farmland. Buddhism advocated for women saints or nuns since the time of the inception of the religion. But gradually, only monk’s remained in monasteries while the nuns had no place to live. A student nun said that she is really proud of being a nun. In 2012, with the initiative of a few senior women saints, Buddhist nuns got a home of their own. The female organisation of nuns started the work of the all-women monastery seeing the pathetic conditions of the nuns, who were homeless. Formerly, only the monks used to get invitations for any cultural practice but with the introduction of the all-women monastery, eventually the nuns also started getting invitations for the same.
