The history of Jammu city says that Raja Jambu Lochan established Jammu city in the 14th century BC. However, Maurya, Kushan and Gupta dynasty were also prevalent in Jammu.
Akhnoor excavation depicted that Jammu city was once part of Harappan civilization as per the ancient history. Hephthalites then ruled the area at around 480 AD. Kushano-Hephthalite dynasty ruled the area from 565 - 670 AD.
Shahi dominated the area in 670 to 11th century ultimately they were destroyed by Ghaznavids.
In history of jammu city that during the 19th century Maharaja Ranjit Singh ruled Jammu as a Sikh Empire. He appointed Gulab Singh as the ruler of Jammu. British defeated Sikh empire after the death of Maharaja Ranjit Singh. They recognized Gulab Singh as the ruler of Jammu and Kashmir on the condition that he had to pay Rs. 75 Lakhs.
Maharaja Hari Singh was the ruler of Jammu and Kashmir during the partition of India and Pakistan. He was given the choice to freely submit to either India or Pakistan or to remain independent. He first decided to remain independent but later when Pakistan army started to enter by force he sought help of India. He then acceded to India and Jammu and Kashmir became part of India.
