Jammu Festivals

Fairs and festivals of Jammu arte prominent activities of the city that attracts tourists coming in to Jammau. It showcases the tradition and culture of the region and at the same time a place for recreation too. You can enjoy the cultural procession in the famous festivals such as Lohri, Faisakhi, Navratri, Bahu Mela and many more.

Jammu has a major population of Hindu, though Islam and Sikh too reside in large numbers.

Lohri Festival of Jammu:

Lohri festival is celebrated on the same day as Makar Sankranti i.e. on 13 January. Havans and Yagnas are carried out candles are lit in every house and temple of Jammu.

Chajja, a dance form is held on this occasion and boys are decorated with colored paper and flowers. They then dance on the street on drumbeats. Atmosphere of Jammu comes alive during this festival.

Baisakhi Festival:

Baisakhi is celebrated on the first day of Vaisakh. It is known as the harvest festival and is considered auspicious for marriages. Devotees go to the Nagbani temple to celebrate New Year.

People come to fairs held during Baisakhi and enjoy Bhangra dance.

During Baisakhi devotees go to Gurdwaras to listen to kirtans and offer prayers and take Prasad.

Navratri Festival in Jammu:

Jammu & Kashmir State Tourism Department has instituted the Navratri Festival as an annual event to be held during September/October for the nine auspicious days of the Navratras. As during these days most of the devotees turn up for the Yatra of Vaishno Devi.

Enjoy the Bahu Mela:

This Bahu Mela(Fair) is held twice in a year in the Bahu Fort in March to April and then in September to October. It is a major festival and is held at the Kali Temple inside the fort.

Chaitre Chaudash:

Chaitre Chaudash is held between March and April in Uttar Behni, 25 Kms away from Jammu. Uttar Behni is famous for Gupta Ganga (Devak River).

Purmandal Mela

Purmandal Mela is held between Ferbruary and March in Purmandal, 39 kms away from Jammu.

Jhiri Mela:

Jhiri Mela is held between October and November in Jhiri, 14 kms away from Jammu. It is an annual fair.

Mansar Food And Craft Mela:

Masnsar food and Craft Mela is organized during Baisakhi every year at the Mansar Lake, 62 kms away from Jammu. It is celebrated for three days and showcases local crafts and cuisine of Jammu.
