Culture of Jammu

The Culture of Jammu city is Hindu dominated and they are called Dogras. They have a rich and vivid culture though it is influenced by lifestyle of mountainous tribes of Himalyan region Jammu is called city of temples as it has temples in abundance in the city.

67% of Jammu population is Dogra. Other group are: Chibalis, Sudans, Kishtwari, Khatris, Mahajans and Paharis.

In Jammu 65% people practice Hinduism, 30% Islam and most of the remainder are Sikhs and Buddhists.

Jammu city is home of various tribes, religion and castes and their culture & lifestyle is influenced by the mountainous terrain of the Himalayas.

There are various Hindus pilgrims and worship places in Jammu like Amarnath Cave and Vaishno Devi.

Dogras Culture of Jammu:

Dogra culture is an Indo-Aryan Ethnic group. They later branched out into Brahmins, Rajputs, Mahajans and others. There language is Dogri. Indian army has a Dogra Regiment as well.

Gujjars Culture:

Muslim Gujjars culture and traditions is another major group and are originally from Gujarat and Rajasthan. There language is Gujari. They mostly are nomadic people and herding sheep and mountain cattle is their occupation.

Chibali Culture and Traditions of Jammu

Chibalis group people are followers of Islam and few are also Buddhists. There language is Dogri. They originally are from Punjabi descent.

Sudhan Culture & Lifestyle of Jammu

Sudhan group is Muslim and they speak both Kashmiri and Dogri languages.
