Geography of Shimla India

The geography of Shimla is most diverse and multifaceted as the city is located on the verge of subtropical regions and higher Himalayas. The pleasant weather, sometimes steep, sometimes perpendicular landscape of most of the geographical locations of Shimla India is a sure proof of that. The average elevation of the city of Shimla is 2397 meter or 7866 ft. above the sea level and Shimla is located on the ridge and in the north western portion of Himalayas. The whole city of Shimla is stretched at a radius of not more than 15 kilometers, which too after considering few places in the close vicinity of the main city of Shimla that are presently considered as the part of Shimla. The highest point in Shimla is called Jakhoo which governs the landscape of whole Shimla, being situated at the top point of the city with an average elevation close to 8000 ft. above the sea level. Many rivers flow through the district or close vicinity of the Shimla city, like Sutlej, Giri and Pabbar. The geographical landscape of the whole district of Shimla is too much varied and having several types of Himalayan as well as sub Himalayan landscapes. The travelers in this city would definitely miss the quintessential hill culture and living if they do not travel around the whole district of Shimla. In the north east, just a after a 50 odd kilometers of road distance there are some great high altitude destinations, like Kharapaththar and Narkanda. From this region to another 80 to 100 kilometers of radius some of the best apples producing orchards are there. The road that leads from Shimla city to Kharapaththar and further lead to the sub divisional town of Rohru via small hill town of Jubbal goes through the apple orchards in both sides of the road and is a region like the back of a tortoise with Kharapaththar being the highest point in between. Another road that lead from the city of Shimla to the upper recesses of Shimla district passes through Narkanda and leads to higher orchard belts of Kumarsen and Kotgarh and finally through the small town of Rampur at the border of Shimla district to the district of Kinnaur. In the south and in the west Shimla city is encircled by the vegetables and other crop producing regions of lower Himalayan belt and comparatively less rocky and hectic in the land character.The geographical locations of Shimla city and its character of landscape largely differ between lower and higher part of the Shimla district and Shimla city.
