San Marino: Europe City State and World's Oldest Republic

Legend has it that the City-state of San Marino was founded in the early 4th Century by Marinus, a Christian refugee who took shelter on Mt Titano that dominates the San Marino landscape. Because of Mt Titano and the relative geographical isolation enjoyed by San Marino the country has succeeded in preserving its independence with few interruptions. San Marina has a friendship and economic cooperation treaty with Italy dating back to 1862 and the country is the smallest member of the Council of Europe. San Marino is also the oldest republic in the world and its constitution dates back to 1600. The country became a member of the UN in 1992.

San Marino Geography and Climate:
San Marino is a landlocked country within Italy and its topography is dominated by the Apennines range and the highest peak is Mount Titano at 749 metres. The country has no natural flat surface and is Europe’s third smallest country after Vatican City and Monaco.

San Marino enjoys Mediterranean type of climate with summers that are warm and mild winters. In spite of the warm climate the Mediterranean breezes keep the country cool.

San Marino Culture and Tradition:
San Marino is a fine exhibition of Roman and Italian culture. The country was well protected from invasions by the three towers located on the three peaks of Mount Titano. San Marino has its own taste filled cake called the La Torta Di Tre Monti, which is alike to the chocolate covered wafer cake. San Marino also has a thriving music scene as reflected from the new age music genre, the Love Orchestra that belongs to San Marino.

San Marino Economy:
San Marino economy is thriving owing to its booming tourism industry as well as the low taxes prevalent in the country that has bestowed the status of a tax haven upon San Marino. San Marino is not a EU member but still is permitted to use the Euro as its currency through a special arrangement. San Marino also produces fine wine and cheese that also earn some foreign exchange for this small city-state. San Marino also earns considerable revenue from the sale of its postal stamps and few remaining Sammarinese lira that are sold to stamp and coin collectors.

San Marino Tourist Attractions:
Being a historical country San Marino has many interesting places to visit. The Imola Formula Grand Prix is an annual motor racing event that should not be missed by any speed freak. The San leo village located within San Marino also has many classic fortifications, town halls and imposing gates that are worth a visit.
