Jagannath, an Avatar of Vishnu according to Hindus and Buddha according to Buddhists is a deity worshiped along with his brother Balabhadra deva and sister devi Subhadra by Hindus and Buddhists in India.

Principal idol is placed at Puri, Orissa. It is also a part of Char Dham Yatra in Hindu religion.

The idol of Jagannath in Puri is 6 feet tall (1.83 m) and is of black color. Eyes are round and have three circles of Red, white and black.

Ratha-Yatra, also known as Shri Gundicha yatra is carried out in the month of Asadha (June or July). It is one of the most auspicious festivals in Hindu religion. During this festival Jagannath triad are worshiped. The Rathas (Chariots) are made of wood and are built afresh every year. These Raths are pulled by the devotees.

Jagannath, along with Balabhadra and Subhadra are taken out of Bada Deula (chief temple). They are then brought to Bada Danda (main street of Puri) and are taken to Shri Gundicha Temple, which is 3 km away from the temple. Three deities stay for seven days in Gundicha Temple. Then they are taken back to Shri Mandir in bahuda yatra in same Raths. On their way back, Raths halt at Mausi Maa Temple where they are offered Poda Pitha.

They are carried in massive Raths (chariots). Devotees from around India and world come here to have a Darshan (Holy view) of these deities.

These Raths are approximately 45 feet high and 35 feet square. It takes about 2 months to construct these Raths. They are built by devotees.
