Fiji: The Exotic Island in the Pacific

The first settlers of Fiji were the Europeans who came here around 1643 and discovered this landmass accidently followed by English navigators who further explored it in 18 th century. In Fiji, Cannibalism was widely practiced till 19 th century when missionaries came in mid 19 th century and put a stop to this practice by introducing Christianity among the tribals. In late 19 th century Indians entered these islands and worked as sugar plantation workers. Today there is a thriving Indian community in Fiji that ahs added to the cultural mosaic of Fiji.

  • Geography, Climate and Economy of Fiji :

    The Terrain of Fiji largely consists of rugged mountainous ranges that have volcanic origins. The total area of arable land accounts to 11%, which is along the coasts and thereby nearly half of the population live along the Fijian coasts. The central Fijian highlands are sparsely populated due to rough terrain, whereas some of the areas are covered with thick tropical forests. And the major agricultural production consists of sugarcane, which is favored by dry climatic conditions.

    Fiji's climate is largely tropical and it differs considerably in different islands. December to April are the summer months having maximum temperature around 32 degrees Celsius and characterized by humidity and heavy rainfall. The winter months are May to November and Fijians experience moderate temperatures of around 27 degree Celsius.

    The Natural resources of Fiji consists largely of forest resources, minerals like gold and copper, fish and considerable amounts of oil and hydropower. Sugar exports form a significant part of its economy having access to European Union markets. Fiji's tourism also forms an integral part of the Economic sector.

    Culture and Cuisine of Fiji:

    The Fijian culture is an amalgam of various cultures such as Indian, Chinese, European and their own unique indigenous culture. This very aspect is depicted through their tradition, language, dance, music, costume and architecture. The blend of modern and ethnic culture presents a unique picture of Fijian tradition. Though the official language of Fiji is English, locals also speak in Bauan dialect that showcases their ancient traditional roots.

    A typical Fijian cuisine includes meat dishes, cassava and taro leaves. Also the most popular Fijian dish is Kassaua, which is prepared especially during festival time. Along with this a number of ingredients such as fenugreek, cumin, garlic, turmeric and other spices are added to enhance the taste of the dish. The popular fruits of Fiji include lime, guava, bananas and pineapple.

    Suva, the capital city of Fiji has a lot more to offer to the tourists in terms of site seeing. The Fiji Museum, consists of a large variety of Fijian artifacts and some historical displays from South Pacific. Along with this, the adventure lovers may head for the coastline to enjoy swimming, rafting, yachting or just surfing along its beautiful beaches.
