Darjeeling, one of the districts in the Indian states of West Bengal and its adjacent areas are the aboard of Gorkha, a special community living in that area that demands the creation of a special state called Gorkhaland where all the advantages will be for them and they wont face any hurdle. In the year 1980 the leader of the Gorkha community commenced a new regional political party called Gorkha National Liberation Front under the leadership of Subhash Gishing. Immediately the community through the means they invented protested against the national government for taking a blind eye to their issue and continued violence to achieve their end. In the parliamentary polls of 1996, 1998, 1999 the party boycotted the elections and backed the congress candidate for a stupendous victory. The GNLF may not have achieved remarkably in the national or state poll but in the council poll of Darjeeling GNLF had complete majority due to their large presence. The main objective of the regional party is to provide every type of progress to the Gorkhas and bring them to the forefront of socio-economic development. GNLF runs Darjeeling Gorkha Autonomous Hill Council with Subhash Gishing as the chairman.
