Delhi Mass Rapid Transit System or Delhi metro was inaugurated in Dec. 2002 in Delhi for the smooth service of transportation in the capital. It is a joint venture of Delhi govt. and the central govt. completely authorized by Delhi Metro Rail Corporation. Delhi Metro has underground, surface of the ground and elevated ground line service operated in the city. Metro trains generally run at a speed 50 to 80 km per hour. The track of metro is broad gauge. The total length of currently operated metro line is 68 kms having 62 stations in the first phase of metro which is divided into 3 lines as Red line of 25.15 kms having 21 stations and 23 trains, yellow line of 10.84 kms having 10 stations an 13 trains and Blue line of 32.10 kms having 31 stations and 34 trains. The construction of metro line is divided into 3 phases out of which first is operating in the city, the second phase is undergoing fast construction with a total length of 128 kms and 79 stations which is targeted to be completed by 2010. The third phase of 112 kms and 4th phase of 108.5 kms are designed to be completed by 2015 and 2020 respectively that will make Delhi metro largest in India even surpassing London metro rail. Presently millions of people use metro as the chief means of transportation and avoid the traffic of the city that is the greatest problem of Delhi. And chief advantage of metro journey is fast travel in a short time, comfortable avoiding traffic of the city in a fair price. It also gives smart cards to the daily commuters for their safety and low price travel.
