Assam Gana Parishad, the regional political party in Assam, the northeastern state in India stands for the whole total socio- political, economic and financial development of the state. It is a regional political party, which was formed in 1985 under a historic and monumental circumstance by Prafulla Kumar Mahanta under whose unique and dynamic leadership Assam Gana Parishad contested in the state assembly polls and got a stupendous victory with forming the government and Prafulla Mahanta as the youngest chief minister of Assam. In the national administration the party is tied to Congress led United Progressive Alliance. The party has clung to power twice in 1991 and 2001 owing to its developmental works that it has undertaken during its administration. But though Mahanta brought a major transition in the situation of the state, he went away with the objectives of the party and a lot of allegations were brought against him thus he was finally expelled from the party in 2005 under the charge of being involved in corruption and anti- party activities. The chief ideology of the party is regionalism thus to be the harbinger of over all growth of the region it rules. It desires to fulfill the demands and needs of the poor people who live below poverty line.
The President and Supreme Commander of the Indian Armed Forces Shri Pranab Mukherjee conferred one Kirti Chakra and eleven Shaurya Chakras to Armed Forces Personnel for displaying conspicuous gallantry, indomitable courage and extreme devotion to duty at a solemn ceremony at the Rashtrapati Bhawan here today. Three of the Shaurya Chakra were given posthumously.
