The famous Sonepur Catle Fair is one of the biggest fair of its kind in the Asia, which attracts visitors from every part of the world especially from Asia. It has its own historical importance and it is believed that famous ruler of Patliputra and founder of Mauryan Dynasty, Chandragupta Maurya used to buy elephant and horses from the fair. There was a time when it had attracted visitors from the entire part of Asia for selling and buying of cattle.

Sonepur Fair is held on Kartik Poornima, the full moon day in the month of November every year in Sonepur, a city that has its own historical importance.

Sonepur is situated on the confluence of river Ganges and Gandak and the famous Harihar nath temple is situated here so it also known as Harihar Kshetra Mela for the visitors. It is believed that lord Rama made the temple when he was on his way to Janakpur to win Sita.

On the occasion of Kartik poornima, visitors take a bathe in Gandak and visits Harihar temple which is the part of the Harihar Kshetra mela.

The major significance of the Sonepur cattle fair is that all breeds of various cattle and animals including Persian horses, rabbits and elephants, horses present in the fair on various stalls, which attracts visitors. Various species of birds and poultry are also the major attractions of the fair, which enchants the people form various part. Not only cattle but fair also displays the gamut of various goods including garments, furniture, horticulture and agricultural implements and handicrafts.

Now the fair has turned into its new format and has achieved modern look and approach. Now one can trade toys, utensils and jeweler and other useful things, which is part of daily life. Now the fair has become a center for dance, masti and music, which attracts tourist from every part of country.
