Rail, police stand off continues in Russian teen's death

National, Fri, 15 May 2009 IANS

Panaji, May 15 (IANS) There has been not a single incident where a passenger has fallen off a train and come under it, said a Konkan Railway Corporation Limited (KRCL) official, summoned to the Mapusa police station Friday to record his statement about the death of Russian teenager Elena Sukhonova.

KRCL spokesman Baban Ghatge stuck to his comments to the media Monday, when he had insisted that the Russian tourist could not have fallen off the train, thereby ruling out the 'accidental death' theory floated by the police.

'No passenger has ever fallen off the train and come under its wheels along the KRCL tracks. The statement I made to the media was after taking this fact into consideration,' Ghatge told IANS.

'I was called to the police station because they wanted to record my statement vis a vis my comments to the media last week,' Ghatge said.

The KRCL official's statement had completely punctured the police version that Elena's death was accidental which was leaked to the media May 9, even before the post mortem was completed.

Even the Russian consulate has expressed dissatisfaction at the police investigations into Elena's death.

In an official communication to Chief Minister Digambar Kamat, consul general Alexander Mantytsky has expressed disbelief at the accident theory.

Mantytsky has also asked the chief minister to take 'personal control' of the police investigation, reiterating that the accident theory put forth by the police wasn't 'conclusive'.

Elena's mutilated body was found last week by the railway track near a village called Revora, about 30 kms from the state capital.
