Sep 17: Karun Chandhok soared the Indian flag sky-high sweeping maiden title victory in the Grand Prix 2 sprint race at the Belgium circuit at Spa on Sunday. It was certainly the biggest victory of his career, after reeling off a spectacular move on Andy Soucek to finish off in style.
Chandhok, 23, who started second on the grid, got ahead of the long-time leader Andy Soucek, to take his ‘ Durango’ car to victory India's Karun Chandhok with three laps to go. Soucek finished home second with ‘Lucas di Grassi’ third to close to within two points of Timo Glock at the top of the championship.
It is Karun Chandhok’s finest moment at the international auto racing circuit with Durango team.This is the first time that he was on the top spot and an emotional moment indeed with tears of joy were in his eyes, as the Indian national anthem was played for the first time at a F1 event. The Chennai driver surely offers the best hope for the country to fly its flag to the pinnacle of motorsport.
After the maiden triumph the Durango driver described the victory “Awesome, it was perfect day for me,” exclaimed Chandhok.
The win on Sunday was equally memorable and significant for the Durango team as it was the first win of the team since 2005. Ho-Pin Tung was at the head of the field for the start with Chandhok beside him.
Having finished seventh at the feature race on Saturday Chandhok started off with a cautious approach to save his tyres as the leader Soucek pushed hard to gain the lead. On lap 14 Chandhok maneuvered a brilliant move to snatch the lead by surprising everybody.
